Some of the major initiatives taken up by the members of WES-Net are given below. This list is excluding several consultation meetings held by WES-Net with the stakeholders of the WES sector.
Solution Exchange
The Solution Exchange for Water and Environmental Sanitation is an initiative led by UNDP. At its heart, is a professionally moderated email based question and answer service, open to (and used by) all WES-Net members. The Solution Exchange promotes sustainable and equitable access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene in rural and urban areas. In this context, it promotes the sustainable management and equitable allocation of fresh water resources.
Response during Tsunami Disaster
WES-Net members played an active role in coordinating the water and sanitation related works in the affected areas with Government, International agencies and NGOs to address these effectively. A number of such events conducted were found very effective during the relief operations. Two field notes have been prepared on Hygiene and Sanitation respectively with the support of UNICEF involving REDR for use in the affected areas.
Study on Networks
A study on "Existing Networks" was carried out to choose an appropriate institutional model for WES-Net India. Dr. Satyajit Singh led the study, conducted with the support of Water and Sanitation Programme of the World Bank.
The study, which was instrumental in finalizing WES-Net as a Registered Society, concluded that committed leadership, building on existing knowledge and experience and maintaining consensus are all critical to ensure WES-Net continues to expand and work effectively.
ODI Decision Support Tool Launching Workshop
ODI decision support tool launch workshop was conducted at New Delhi with the support of UNICEF. This tool, developed by ODI, is expected to assist the decision making process by the WES sector professionals and managers in India.
Change Management Presentation
A presentation of the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board's (TWAD) Change Management Process, held on the 8th May, 2006 with the support of UNICEF at IIC, New Delhi, highlighted the three-year process of self and institutional improvement adopted by TWAD engineers, and the results achieved on the ground.
