- Workshop on Worsening Water and Sanitation Crisis: with a special focus on children

A workshop on “Worsening Water and Sanitation Crisis: with a Special Focus on Children” was organized by WES-Net India in association with Sphere India, SEEDS India with the support of Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) on the 22nd March 2007. Dr.R.C. Panda, Secretary, GOI and former Head of Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission delivered the key note address at the workshop attended by representatives of CIFF from the UK, members of WES-Net and various organisations working with children. Thematic presentation followed by discussions organised in the workshop brought out some very useful insights on the current problems in the water and sanitation sector which especially affect children and their health. Outcome of the workshop is expected to help agencies working for the welfare of children including CIFF to develop interventions in the water and sanitation sector in India.
- Press Conference on the World Water Day

Water Digest, UNESCO and Plan India organised several events on the eve of World Water day in association with WES-Net India, FAO, Ion Exchange and ITT. The primary and foremost event conducted on the occasion was a press conference which was attended by various distinguished guests from UN agencies, international and national agencies and the private sector. Prof. Saiffudin Soz, Hon’ble Minister for Water Resources was the chief guest on the occasion. Distinguished speakers raised issues around the water and sanitation sector and the need for taking effective steps towards addressing them effectively on the occasion. IEC materials prepared by Plan in 5 regional languages were also released by the minister during the occasion.
- ‘Water for People’: Development Calls for papers

Development is the flagship journal of the Society for International Development (SID) published quarterly by Palgrave Macmillan, London. Development is calling for papers for the March 2008 issue on ‘Water for People’. Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the ANU and editor of such books as: Water First: Issues and Challenges for Nations and Communities in South Asia (Sage, New Delhi, forthcoming); and Fluid Bonds: Views on Gender and Water (Stree, Kolkata, 2006) will be guest editing this issue. Send the abstract of your paper by 4th May 2007 to Kuntala.Lahiri-Dutt@anu.edu.au, and on approval by the editor, submit the full paper (within 3000 words) by 30th October 2007.
- ARSENIC REMOVAL: SONO Household Water Filter Wins

The US National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has announced the winners of the 2007 Grainger Challenge Prize for Sustainability. The contest sought innovative solutions for removing arsenic from drinking water in developing countries. Abul Hussam, an associate professor at George Mason University, USA, will receive the Grainger Challenge Gold Award of US$ 1 million (EUR 761,000)for his SONO filter used in Bangladesh and the Silver Award of US$ 200,000 (EUR 152,000) goes to a team led by Arup K.SenGupta for a community well-head arsenic removal unit serving about 300 households in West Bengal.
