What is WES-Net India?

WES-Net India is a learning alliance of stakeholders in the Water and Environmental Sanitation sector, including NGOs, UN agencies, private sector, consultants, government departments and donors.

The network aims to improve knowledge sharing and co-ordination within the water and sanitation sector - centred on meeting the Millennium Development Goals.

Who can become a member of WES-Net India?

  • Field workers from Government, NGOs or private agencies engaged in water supply and management, wastewater disposal & sanitation operation.
  • Local level administrators, leaders and activists concerned with water access, quality and environmental sanitation.
  • Entrepreneurs and engineers working on appropriate technologies for reliable water supply, sustainable water use and sanitation schemes.
  • Planners and policy makers working in sectors affecting water and environmental sanitation.
  • Donors and sponsors of water and sanitation projects and programmes.
  • Researchers and academics in water and environmental sanitation field.
  • Other professionals interested in improving quality and sustainability of water and sanitation facilities in India.

What are the objectives of WES-Net India?

  • To advocate for the achievement of the MDGs, with due attention to the development and implementation of policies and plans that improve the participation of the poor in effective delivery of water and sanitation services.
  • To strengthen and utilize the capacity of sector organisations by improving coordination, improving knowledge sharing and fostering more effective partnerships.
  • To enhance the exchange of knowledge and information between and within different stakeholders, working at different levels and different geographic locations across India.

Can you mention some of the activities of WES-Net?

  • It provides a platform to build partnerships and promote cooperation in the sector (involving policy makers and planners, service providers, NGOs, CSOs, resource organisations, external support organisations and interested individuals).
  • It improves knowledge sharing and management and the timely dissemination of relevant, reliable information, through a WES-Net news letter and website, sectoral meetings and e-conferences, the UNDP supported Solution-Exchange (an e-mail based question and answer service) and a number of special events over the year.

Some of activities like sector coordination, newsletter, website, database, electronic knowledge network, research coordination and workshops will be carried out with the active involvement of its members.

How does WES-Net functions?

The core group of WES-Net includes members elected by the general body (All the members of WES-Net India) to guide its activities, and a limited number of special invitees. The elected members represent the governing body for all legal purposes. Special invitees, representing agencies such as the UN, facilitate WES-Net relationship with the Government and external support agencies. 

The core group is responsible for the overall functioning of the network and takes all major decisions in consultations with the general body. As per legal requirements, the executive members of the governing board (the secretariat) will manage its day-to-day activities.

Who are the supporters of WES-Net?

WES-Net India functions with support it receives from its member organizations to maintain and manage its secretariat, events, website, research coordination, database, newsletter and other needs arising time to time.

UNICEF, Plan International, WSP, UNDP, WaterAid, Pragmatix, AFPRO, SPWD, CARE India, and FODRA are providing active support to the present initiatives of the network. Apart from these, many active members across the country continue to provide support for various needs of WES-Net that arise time to time.

How can one contribute to activities of WES-Net?

  • Experience sharing and dialogue through WES-Net India meetings, newsletter and website.
  • Provide information related to various events such as workshops, training, vacancies and publications.
  • Send publications, reports and case studies prepared on WES issues for wider sharing.
  • Organise WES sector players in your own operational areas for effective convergence  and joint initiatives in the sector.
